I am using windows xp pro as the host and trying to install 98 as the guest.
Whenever i run setup.exe it starts and says, "Windows 98 requires 16MB of
memory" I have set the ram at bytes from 20mb to 128 and still have the
problem. Can anyone help?

I'm having exactly this problem, and formatting the virtual C: drive didn't
work for me.

THough perhaps I'm doing it wrong. Does it just have to be formatted as
FAT32, or something more to prepare it?

Are you using a proper Win98 boot disk and not, say, a boot disk created
from WinXP...?

The following may be of help: http://www.project9.com/fat32/

Well if my Win98 CD would boot on its own, or my computer had a floppy
drive, my recent life would have been notably more pleasant.

I used a WinXP install CD to format the virtual drive as FAT32, then went
back to installing Win98.

I looked for FDISK on the Win98 CD but couldn't find it...?

Thanks!

It's there in a cab somewhere most likely, you'd need a Win98 emergency boot

have you got another VPC available to which you can hook your new Vhd, and
partition it. maybe you could also format it and copy the setupfiles to the
vhd. make the disk bootable from a vfd and boot the vpc from the virtual
floppy drive. (I'll reply to my own post with a lot of files (a split
archive , use winzip 9 to open) Because the newsgroup does not permit me to
uplaod a file of around 700 kB.
Using this "floppy" you can boot from it, load the CD drivers and install
Win98.

Good luck

Please do not post binary files to the public news groups. NNTP is
meant to be a text, not a binary medium (unless the news group
specifically has the word binary in its name). Also, anyone who is dumb
enough to download a binary file from a public news group deserves
whatever nasty virus or malware that they get.

You didnt screw around with Partition magic did you? or did u try umm
compressing the harddrive? Compressing a harddrive with windows 98
causes all sorts of problems especialy with formating and data loss.If
you did i recomend uncompressing the HD as fast as possible thats if u
still can..Remeber Partitioning and compressing harddrives really dose
cause 2 many problems and isnt ever worth it..

Thanks to everyone for your help so far -- especially Steve Jain.

Steve's pre-fab Win98 VPC files seem to be working really well.

Except I've gotten to the point where the Win98 install had me restart
(after copying all the files to c:), and now the VM has restarted to the A:
prompt. What do I do now?

(My apologies if that's painfully obvious but I'm new to all this.)

THanks!

Whooooooo! Windows 98 -- Operating System of the Future!

Thank you Mark and Paul.

While I'm up and running now, I of course perversely want to create more
trouble for myself.

I'd like to still figure out why what I was doing before wasn't working (see
about 20 posts above), and how I can create my own replication of Steve
Jain's setup, using only secure files from my Win98 CD.

So:

- what was I still doing wrong in setting up the VPC hard drive so that I
was getting the "Must have 16 MB memory" error (I had partitioned the Win98
virtual drive... is that not recommended?)

- how do I create my own Emergeny Boot Disk, directly from the compressed
files on the Win98 CD preferably, as a floppy image that VPC can use, on a
computer with no physical floppy drive (using WinImage? Is that a reputable
and secure app for sure?)

- what has Steve done to prepare the VHD (I see there are files already
install on the virtual C: drive)

Thanks!

You need to partition and format the drive, otherwise you will get
this error.

MS or Google will have instructions. You can also just create a
Windows 98 Start up disk during the installation or after installation

Whenever i run setup.exe it starts and says, "Windows 98 requires 16MB of

You need to put it on the recommended memory 16MB. Move the bar there and it should work.

To my knowledge, a 16mb setting is not required. I install Win9x/ME with
anything from 64mb to 256mb without the OP's issue. He is running into

I recently brought a game but it unfortunately it wont work on XP when
looking for help files/forums on Google, I read about someone else who had
the same problem as I have with there copy of the game he said he used a
Virtual PC. I searched for virtual pc on Google and found Microsoft Virtual
PC 2007 after reading about what Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 is I thought that
might help.

I download and installed Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 all was fine last time I
played this game was on my old PC which had Windows 98 as the OP so I thought
I would install Windows 98 onto the Virtual PC using the Windows 98 Disc I
got with my old PC.

But I had some problems when installing Windows 98 it brought things up
saying something like (can't find this file and can't find that file) I
clicked on skip this file it seemed to continue to install just fine. But
it’s not working fine every time I start the Virtual PC it says (Cannot find
a device file that may be needed to run Windows or Windows applications)
these are the 4 files it can’t find (vnetsup.vxd, vredir.vxd, dfs.vxd and
vnetbios.vxd) it says to press any key to continue which I do. After the
vnetbios.vxd it brings up a Windows Networking error message that reads
(Unable to load the dynamic link library, msnp32.dll, The system cannot find
the file specified, Some or all of the following feature is not available) I
click on the ok button and then it loads into Windows 98 screen and
everything seems fine.

I installed the game all was fine until I tried to play it the DARN Virtual
PC doesn’t detect my Graphics card, is there anyway to make the Virtual PC
detect all the hardware that my PC has? And to uninstall/reinstall Windows 98
properly so it will hopefully start up without any problems?

Although the install appeared to finish, it really had not and possibly you
ended it too quickly.
The .vxd files are virtual drivers that at the very end of the install will
be combined into a file called "vmm32.vxd" and be accessed from there.

To get thoroughly confused, read
http://www.helpwithwindows.com/techfiles/vmm32.html (and it would probably
be best not to take all of that too seriously. :-))

Excerpt:

"What is VMM32.VXD:

To try and explain why what these sites tell you is wrong, you need to know
what vmm32.vxd is. Vmm32.vxd is a monolithic driver file made up of a number
of various *.vxd files. It is a W4 format archive using the MRCI compression
of Drivespace. However, to keep things simple, you can think of it as a
archive of different *.vxd files combined into one library file that can
loaded as one file but that the individual files within it can be used as if
they were individually loaded. Basically vmm32.vxd just contains a
collection of different *.vxd files your system needs for startup, each file
is stripped of the headers that are required if that same file was loaded
separately. Between the stripped headers and the compression used in
vmm32.vxd it is considerably smaller that all the individual files,
contributing to its faster load time. "

But
it's not working fine every time I start the Virtual PC it says (Cannot find
a device file that may be needed to run Windows or Windows applications)
these are the 4 files it can't find (vnetsup.vxd, vredir.vxd, dfs.vxd and
vnetbios.vxd) it says to press any key to continue which I do. After the
vnetbios.vxd it brings up a Windows Networking error message that reads
(Unable to load the dynamic link library, msnp32.dll, The system cannot find
the file specified, Some or all of the following feature is not available) I
click on the ok button and then it loads into Windows 98 screen and
everything seems fine.
I installed the game all was fine until I tried to play it the DARN Virtual
PC doesn't detect my Graphics card, is there anyway to make the Virtual PC
detect all the hardware that my PC has? And to uninstall/reinstall Windows 98
properly so it will hopefully start up without any problems?
It seems that your Windows98 CD was damaged very badly.

And VPC will never detect the graphics card in your physical PC. That is
not how virtualization works. The virtual machine will use the emulated
graphics card in the virtual machine. The help files in VPC give you details
of the emulated devices.

If I was to use the Restore CD + Floppy Disk that came with my old pc would

So long as you are within the Virtual machine, it will reboot the virtual
machine.

At the top of the VM window, you will see "Action Edit CD Floppy Help"

click on 'CD" and click on use physical device <whatever the drive letter
is> and all input from the CD will be directed to the VM. Same with
"Floppy".

If you start the existing W98 virtual machine, insert the floppy and CD in
their respective drives then attach the CD and floppy to the virtual
machine (using the CD and Floppy menus) re-starting the virtual machine
will cause it to boot from the floppy/CD - depending on how you have the
virtual machine's BIOS set.

Make sure the virtual machine window is in focus (click inside once) and
then when you insert the floppy and cd in the physical drives the vm will
capture them. Use the Action menu to reset the vm and if you haven't
changed any settings in the vm's bios it will start up from the floppy. As
long as the messeges that appear are in the vm's window you needn't worry
about anything happening to the host. A vm is like Las Vegas; what happens
there stays there.

Thank you t FACE, Jeff Gaines and Colin Barnhorst. I used the Restore
CD+Floppy disk and it worked I now have a VPC that runs Windows 98 perfectley
and the game now works perfectley as well at last. Now I created a second
Virtual PC thinking I would start all over again but I don't need it now how
do I go about completeley removing the second Virtual PC that I don't need?
Thanks to all who respond.

You can simply delete the virtual machine folder for the unneeded vm. Look
in your Documents folder for the My Virtual Machines folder. The virtual
machine fies for the vm you want to delete is in there. You delete them
like you would any other data file. You remove the entry on the Virtual PC
Console by highlighting the entry and clicking Remove.

It may be worth pointing out that the filetype of the control file will be
.vmc and also the filename will be the name of the machine. The harddisk
will be of filetype .vhd and the name of that file is in the settings of the
vm on the vpc console, running or non-running -- or, it will be in the .vmc
file, which if you open the file with notepad and scan down, you will see it
-- for example, mine appears as:

<absolute type="string">D:\vmcware\win98 se.vhd</absolute>

So when you have painted your targets <G>, delete them......

(If you had multiple hard disks for that virtual machine, adjust as
necessary)

FWIW:
And I always add an entry to the environment variables:
MYVIRTUALMACHINES=c:\VirtualPC
This moves the default location of new VirtualPC files out from the
not-so-useful original path in "My Documents"

And for Windows I always uncheck the completely wrong default setting
"Use simple file sharing (recommended)", which cripples all networking
at least on XP.

The environment variable is a nice touch. I did not do it that way.
In the "new virtual machine wizard", both .vmc and .vhd creation give the
"name and location" option. I use that to make machines the first level
down from the root. I agree that the "My Virtual Machines" default
directory is not-so-usable -- or at least hard to use -- being about 5
levels down from the root.

I have not gotten into that part. All of my VM machines use VM
Additions.iso for win95 and above, or, the VMadditions for DOS .vfd, as
necessary) and all above WFWG 3.11 use the host ISP DSL connection.

(Although I followed all the thirty or so steps at
http://blogs.msdn.com/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2004/10/28/248940.aspx
I did not get WFWG 3.11 networking. I wrote it off as a "noble
experiment".)

BTW, I use Ztree and Qedit, so when I refer to "My Computer" and Notepad
operations, i consider that "kludging" it. (Back in the 8.3 environments, I
use Xtree and Qedit -- I would not expect you to have heard of any of those,
but I am sure that you have similar utilities in Sweden.)
